The Secretary's '96 Dispatch

Being the oldest Interact Club in Kuching, the Interact Club of SMB St. Joseph was chartered in 1969. As an Interact Club in District 3310, we are under the sponsoring of Rotary Club of Kuching. Various activities has been carried out throughout the past year and the activities are as follows.

  1. Open Days (Charity Sales)
  1. School for Mentally Retarded Children.
Approximately 60 stalls took part in this sale including leading hotels in Kuching, sports clubs, restaurants as well as social clubs. The open day, which was held in the month of April, started from 7 in the morning till 1 in the afternoon. We opened a song-request stall which was fully managed by the Form Four Interactors. About 10 Interactors took part in the sale.
Although we did not manage to collect a lot of money, we were able to cheer up the atmosphere and it was a great and fun experience for us. And most of all, we did it for a good cause, that is to help the needy, like a famous saying. "it's the thought that counts".
  2. Cheshire Home Open Day.
About 40 stalls took part in the open day. With around 25 Interactors, we opened 3 stalls for this auspicious event. The stalls were a food stall (chicken), a game stall and a request booth. We earned about RM600 and we donated every single cent to the charitable organization. Well done, Interactors!! Though it was really exhausting to manage three different stall, the Interactors were exposed to the real drama of typical food stall.
  3. Charity Sale of The Sarawak Society for the Blind.
The Interact Club of SJS too part in the open day on the 29
th of September 1996. About 15 Interactors were involved in the sale. Again, we set up a game stall. The game, which attracted many civilians earned us around RM150.
Many people, young and old, turned up on that day. Before the sale, we had put in a lot of effort trying to seek for sponsors for our stall.
  4. Chrismas Charity Bazaar.
Around 15 Interactors took part in this sale which was organized by the Kuching Hilton. Not much profit was earned but it was an enjoyable experience. Around 30 stalls took part in the sale.
  1. The 8th Joint Installation Night
The installation took place at our school in the Tan Sri William Tan Auditorium. Among the guests invited for the auspicious event were Datuk Ang Lai Soon, Rotarian Victor Lee, the President of Rotary Club Kuching and the other Rotarians.
Before the installation, a committee was formed to run the Installation Night. The chairman was SIm Keng Yong, assisted by Jong Kiam Ngee as the vice-chairman. Kueh Yuh Ling was the secretary while Rebecca Chieng was the treasurer. They had done a tremendous job as the installation night was a great succes.
Our Interactors, led by our very own "Gary Barlow", that is Interactor Darian Ang as the lead singer, while Larry, Magnus and Meng Kuan, as the background singers, performed a song entitled "Back for Good". The musicians helping up were Jeremy Toh (guitarist), Terrence Shim (guitarist), and Desmond Sim (pianist).
  2. Friendly Basketball Match with the Leos'
Since, many of our Interactors are very keen to play basketball, the board decided to organize a friendly basketball match between the Interactors and the Leos. 10 Interactors were chosen for the team and the called themselves "The Mighty Bear I". The spectators were enjoying themselves as the game turned up to be rather exciting. However, we lost quite badly, and the score? Hmmmm.... Ask the Interactors if you want to know.
  3. Clean Up Day
This is the most recent project held by the Club. It was actuall a joint project with the Prefectorial Board to clean the school before it re-opens for the new semester. Around 20 Interactors took part, which saw Interactors working hand in hand with each other as well as the prefects.

So, the list goes on and on. There were actually some more activities held during the whole of last year such as:

  1. Clean up the World Day - organized by Rotary International.
  2. Ice-cream sale - fund-raising project.
  3. Rotary-Rotaract-Interact Telematch.

Well, our resolution for the year? Hmmm...let me see... Do we have one? Sure we do! We hope for a better year ahead as well as success in our future undertakings and the utmost important, to serve one before self. So, how about you? Like a saying, which goes like this, "If you itch for success, keep on scratching".
